Soup Dumpling Recipes #1: Traditional British Soup Dumplings

The simplest and most commonly made dumplings in the UK are the traditional British soup dumplings. These take only a few minutes to prepare, and they take on the flavours of the soup during cooking.

Ingredients for British Soup Dumplings

  • 9 oz/ 250 g self-raising flour
  • 4 1/2 oz/ 125 g shredded suet
  • 7 fl oz/ 200 ml water
  •  Black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt

How to Make British Soup Dumplings

  1. Put the flour in a mixing bowl and stir in the suet and salt.
  2. Season with black pepper.
  3. Make a well in the centre of the mixture and add the cold water.
  4. Stir the mixture together with your hand to create a soft dough.
  5. Flour your hands and divide the mixture into 12 pieces and hand-roll into balls.
  6. Dumplings take about 20 minutes to cook through, so drop them into your soup, stew, or broth 20 minutes before you are ready to serve.

Additional Tips for Making Soup Dumplings

  • You can also use soup dumplings in broths, stews, and casseroles.
  • Add some flavour to the vegan dumplings by adding herbs.
  • If you are watching your salt intake, then leave out the salt or use a low-sodium alternative.
  • To create a crunchy texture on the top of your dumplings, put the soup, stew, or casserole into the oven for five minutes before serving. While the submerged part of the dumpling remains soft and moist, the upper part gets a crunchy topping.
  • If you do not have any self-raising flour at home, you can use plain flour with 1 tsp of baking powder.
